5 Leadership Strategies For Employee Retention

True leadership isn’t about holding a position of power; it’s about building meaningful connections that inspire and support those around you. In this episode of The Social Media Takeaway, I’m joined by Roxanne Derhodge, a registered psychotherapist, corporate consultant, and bestselling author with over 20 years of experience. In this episode, Roxanne shares five essential tips for leaders to keep their teams engaged, connected, and thriving.

Here are Roxanne’s five golden pieces of advice:

1. Awareness

Roxanne says it all starts with self-awareness. You need to understand how your mood, body language, and even your tone affect the team. Are you coming across like a confident leader or the office tornado no one wants to cross? Being mindful of your internal space can make all the difference. Check in with yourself before you check in with your team!

2. Communication

Communication isn’t just about getting your point across—it’s about listening… REALLY listening. Roxanne stressed the importance of open and honest conversations with your team, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s all about creating a space where people feel safe to speak up. Personally, I think there’s no better feeling than when someone says, “I feel heard.” Let’s be honest, communication isn’t always easy, especially when you’ve got 1,000 things on your plate, but a quick chat can sometimes solve what an hour-long meeting can’t!

3. Connection

According to Roxanne, connection is the glue that holds everything together. It’s not just about working together, but truly connecting. It could be as simple as asking about someone’s weekend (I know I love a good chat about binge-worthy podcasts!) or recognizing when someone’s having a tough day. The stronger the relationships, the more likely your team is to stick around and support each other.

4. Balance

We all have stress, but Roxanne reminds us that it’s how we manage it that matters. Balance means finding a way to stay calm under pressure without it spilling over onto others. Personally, I love taking walks on the beach and taking deep breaths when things get hectic, but whatever works for you—do it! Roxanne’s advice here is gold: if you can keep your cool, your team will too.

5. Recognition

Finally, Roxanne emphasized the importance of recognition. And no, it’s not just about praising the loudest voice in the room. Recognition has to be meaningful to each person—whether they thrive on public praise or prefer a quiet thank you. This one really resonates with me because I’ve worked with all kinds of personalities, and it’s true: not everyone wants the spotlight. Sometimes a simple “great job” in a one-on-one is all someone needs to feel appreciated.

So there you have it—five pieces of wisdom from Roxanne that will help you lead your team with confidence, connection, and a whole lot of heart! I would love to hear your thoughts on this, so feel free to share your own leadership experiences and what resonates with you.
