Guesting on Podcasts? Here’s How to Make It Pay Off

If you’re landing podcast guest slots but not seeing leads or sales, this goldmine of The Social Media Takeaway (available on all the leading podcast platforms including iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube) is something you shouldn’t miss.

This week’s episode, I was joined by Lyndsay Phillips – Podcast Leverage/Repurposing🎙️ a content marketing pro turned podcast guesting strategist. Lyndsay helps experts get real results from their guest appearances.

Not just exposure. Not just nice chats. Clients.

Here’s the problem:

Most people treat their podcast interviews like PR. They show up, tell a few stories, then wait for the leads to roll in.

“People think visibility alone is enough. But that’s not how it works,” says Lyndsay.

💡Instead, she says your podcast interview should act like a bridge from your listener’s pain to your solution.

Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Craft a Billboard-Ready Topic Forget vague or generic topics like “Content Marketing 101.” If your title doesn’t grab attention and clearly solve a problem, people will scroll on by. You want sexy and strategic.
  2. Use an Interview GPS A typical “one sheet” with scattered topics and random questions? That just makes for a messy interview. Instead, map out a tight set of interview questions that guide the conversation towards your core offer without being pushy.
  3. Plan Your Talking Points Show up with concise, intentional messages that build authority and pull people closer to your services. Lyndsay calls these “message pavers.”
  4. Don’t Fear Repetition If you’re bored of saying the same thing, that’s a good sign. As I often say,  “You want to be known for something”. Each interview should reinforce your positioning.
  5. Repurpose Like a Pro Your podcast appearances are gold. Turn them into reels, posts, blogs, carousels, and emails. Don’t just say “I was on a show.” Share the value. “Make your content work harder for you,” says Lyndsay.

And as I said in the episode,

“If you’re not thinking about this stuff, you’re leaving money on the table.”
