24 Methods to Stimulate Critical Thinking and Team Collaboration in the Workplace

Ever had one of those meetings where the silence is so thick you could cut it with a knife, or where the only ideas bouncing around are the ones from the same three people? We’ve all been there, and it’s not exactly where creativity thrives. But what if you could turn those awkward silences into moments of breakthrough? Or get everyone at the table to chip in with ideas, even the ones who usually hang back? Well, you’re in luck!

In this week’s episode of the Social Media Takeaway, I’m joined by Miriam O Donoghue, an accomplished facilitator and trainer with over 40 years of experience. Miriam is a pro at turning even the most challenging meetings into productive and engaging sessions. With credentials like being a certified Lego® Serious Play® facilitator and a Tony Buzan Licensed Mind Mapping Instructor, Miriam’s got some fantastic (and fun) techniques up her sleeve to help you navigate those tricky situations, boost creativity, and get everyone involved. Whether it’s using Scrabble tiles for brainstorming or a stuffed fish to address the ‘elephant in the room,’ Miriam’s tips are sure to breathe new life into your meetings.

Here are four amazing methods used by Miriam:

1. Lego® Serious Play® (LSP): Ever thought of using LEGO® to solve serious workplace problems? Miriam has! Miriam uses LEGO® Serious Play as a creative tool to unlock deeper thinking and communication within teams. In this method, participants build models with LEGO® bricks that represent their ideas, challenges, or solutions. By externalising thoughts in a tangible form, team members can explore complex concepts and foster open discussions, making it easier to address issues and generate innovative solutions. This approach is particularly effective in breaking down communication barriers and encouraging full participation from all team members

2. Focused Conversation (ICA:UK Technology of Participation (ToP)® Methods.): Imagine a meeting where everyone participates and concrete outcomes are achieved.  That’s the goal of Focused Conversations, developed by the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA:UK). This technique is built around a process that guides discussions in a structured way.  By using this methodology, Miriam ensures that every participant’s voice is heard, allowing the group to move from surface-level discussions to a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand, ultimately leading to well-considered conclusions.

3. Consensus Workshops: Miriam uses consensus workshops to guide groups and teams towards unified decisions, especially when faced with diverse opinions. This structured method involves group discussions where participants share their ideas, which are then grouped and refined into a collective agreement. By ensuring that all perspectives are considered and valued, consensus workshops help teams reach decisions that everyone can support, making it a powerful tool for building agreement and clarity in any group setting.

4. Critical Thinking Techniques: When it comes to critical thinking, Miriam knows how to keep it fun and effective. Got an unspoken issue in the room? She’ll whip out a ‘smelly fish’ toy to encourage people to talk. Need to shake up your brainstorming? Try her Scrabble tile technique, where the challenge of forming words leads to unexpected ideas. Or, if you’re stuck on a problem, roll some story cubes to unlock new perspectives. These techniques encourage participants to think outside the box, challenge assumptions, and collaborate more effectively to find innovative solutions.
